A 2002 Honda Civic 'Bad Head Gasket' Was Really a Beru Coil Pack and Radiator Problem

I've been on the parts side of the automotive world for 14 years. In my first year, I made a mistake that still annoys me: I helped a shop order a head gasket set for a car that didn't need one. The customer paid for a tear-down, a machine shop visit, and a pile of parts that went back. The actual problem was a coil pack that failed under load. That job cost me about $900 in restocking fees plus one very long apology. So when a local shop called me in September 2024 about a 2002 Honda Civic with a suspected bad head gasket, I did something unusual: I asked for proof.

The Phone Call

  2. Do a combustion leak test. A block tester draws air from the radiator into a blue fluid. If exhaust gas is leaking into the cooling system, the fluid turns yellow. This car's fluid stayed blue.
  3. Do a compression test. If two adjacent cylinders read low, the head gasket is likely gone between them. This car had 160 to 170 psi across all four cylinders.

Every one of those tests said the same thing: the head gasket was fine. I've learned this lesson the expensive way. The symptoms that point to a head gasket can be caused by something much simpler. You don't skip the test because you're in a hurry. That's how mistakes become $1,500 repairs.

The Detour: Fuel Pump Tool Removal

I should admit that I didn't go straight to the right answer. While the shop was checking fuel trims, they saw a slightly lean condition and wondered if fuel pressure was low. If you're ever told your car needs a head gasket, ask for the test results. A shop that says 'it has to be the head gasket' without doing a combustion leak test or compression test is guessing. You shouldn't pay for a guess.

I'd rather spend ten minutes explaining how to test for a bad head gasket than process a return on a head gasket set nobody needed. By the end of this job, the customer's bill was less than half of the original estimate. The shop kept a customer, and I stopped another mistake before it happened. The Beru coil pack and connector have been on the car for five months now. No comeback. No misfire. No overheating. That's the version of this business I like.
